A Move-Out Cleaning Checklist for an Empty House
Once the furniture is gone, every cabinet, closet and corner is visible, and each one needs its turn.

The truck is loaded, the rooms echo, and every scuff, crumb and handprint that furniture used to hide is suddenly in plain view. Cleaning an empty house is a different job from cleaning one you live in, and it's easy to underestimate. Here is what a thorough move-out clean covers and how to time it.
Why an empty house is a different job
When a home is lived in, a cleaner works around your belongings and focuses on surfaces. Once everything is out, nothing is in the way, so the work reaches places no one has touched in years: the inside of every drawer, the back corners of closets, the shelves in the pantry. There is also nowhere to hide. A buyer, a landlord or the next family walking through will open the cabinets and look.
Green Flamingo Cleaning Services treats a move-out clean as a deep clean for an unoccupied home. It includes everything in the deep clean list, plus a set of extras that only make sense when the house is empty.
The extras an empty home needs
- The inside of every drawer and cabinet, including the pantry.
- The inside of closets and built-in shelves and cabinets.
- The inside of the windows.
- The refrigerator, inside and outside.
- The inside of the oven.
- A sweep of an empty garage.
On top of those come the standard deep clean details: baseboards, door frames, cabinet fronts, spot cleaning on walls within reason, the outsides of appliances, blinds, light switches and floors. Bathrooms get the same treatment as always, with the toilet, tubs, shower glass, counters and fixtures all done in full.
Timing it before the keys change hands
The best moment for a move-out clean is after the last box and the last piece of furniture are out, and before you hand over the keys or have the final walk-through. Cleaning earlier means doing the work twice, because moving brings dust, footprints and tape residue. Cleaning later means rushing on a deadline.
Plan to have the house fully empty, including the garage, the closets and the cabinets, before the team arrives. Anything still sitting inside a drawer or on a shelf is something the cleaner has to work around. Booking a few days ahead of your handoff date leaves a cushion in case the move itself runs long.
One customer scheduled a move-out clean in preparation for the final inspection and wrote that the team hit every nook and cranny and were friendly and helpful throughout. A tight timeline is easier to manage when the clean is booked early.
It also helps to think in terms of the final walk-through. Stand in the doorway of each room with the lights on and look low and high: baseboards, the tops of door frames, the inside of the oven, the shelves in the pantry. Those are the spots the person doing a handover inspection tends to check, and they're all on the move-out list. If you spot anything that looks different from what you expected, call or text within 48 hours and the team will re-clean those areas at no cost.
A quick walk-through before the team arrives
A few minutes of prep makes the visit smoother and keeps things from getting thrown out or left behind by accident.
- Take everything out of cabinets, closets, the pantry and the fridge.
- Empty the garage, or at least clear the floor so it can be swept.
- Haul out trash and unwanted items, so nothing is left for the cleaner to sort through.
- Leave a key, door code or lockbox if you won't be there.
- Tell the team about anything you want them to pay special attention to.
Move-in cleans work the same way
The same service works at the other end of the move. Cleaning a new place before the furniture goes in is much easier than doing it afterward, since every surface is reachable and nothing needs to be shifted. Cabinets and closets get wiped out before you fill them, and the floors get mopped while there is nothing to move off of them. It's one of the few times you can start with a truly fresh slate. Homeowners getting a house ready to list use it too, since a clean, empty home shows well.
